Five Tips to Help Market Your Startup Locally

Word of mouth is a phenomenal way to generate buzz about your startup business. Depending on the model of your business, you may need to intrigue potential clients on a local, national, or global level. Regardless of your market reach, there are ways to reach out to those closest to you, the locals, in order to market your startup.

Hold an event – Your company can host a bbq, concert, race, or some other event which involves local people. Letting locals know your business likes to give back as well as socialize can definitely get people talking about you.

Create a mascot – Do some creative thinking and create a mascot for your business. Hire someone to walk around popular areas of your business’ town costumed as your mascot. The mascot can pass around flyers, coupons, as well as speak with locals in order to educate them about your business.

Donate to a local charity – If you do some research, you can find a plethora of local charities that would appreciate your donation. To get the word out to the masses, write a press release about your charitable action and send it to local papers.

Shoot a commercial – YouTube allows people to upload videos for free. Your business can shoot a commercial using local people and landmarks and place it on YouTube. Local people may like your sense of local appreciation and celebrate your business with kind words.

Local reciprocity – Outsourcing is very popular with businesses. If a business does not have the in-house resources to complete a particular task, they may outsource it to another business. Search for other local businesses that are not competitors, but closely related to your business so that you may help one another. For instance, they provide you with a service and vice versa; and, both parties can promote one another in their respective stores and/or Web sites.
