Direct Mailing Tips

A startup needs to alert potential customers about products/services. This can be done through direct mailings. It is beneficial to carefully construct the direct mailer in order to recruit the most responses. Consider implementing the following tips.

Business Startup Tips:

  • A sales mailer identifies needs and presents a way to fulfill them.

  • Grab the reader's attention from the beginning. The attention span for mailers is short.

  • Define benefits of products/services rather than making the mailer a blatant advertisement.

  • Personalize the letter. It takes more time, but personalized service is what customers want.

  • Implement a 'call to action.' A sales letter should prompt a customer to make a behavior moving them closer to a purchase.

  • Keep the content succinct and free of industry jargon.

  • Type one idea at a time. Do not bombard readers with large blocks of information. Leave plenty of whitespace, and present the offer point by point.

  • Fit the message on one sheet of paper. This keeps costs down and reader interest up.

  • Attach a deadline to the 'call to action.' A deadline creates a sense of urgency.

  • If the letter involves a response, be sure all elements such as return envelope, stamp, etc. are supplied to the customer.
